In October, the tragic news of Matthew Perry’s death emerged, shocking fans worldwide. Perry, renowned for his role as Chandler Bing in the iconic U.S. TV series ‘Friends’, passed away at 54. His unexpected death in the jacuzzi of his Los Angeles home left many in disbelief, with the autopsy later revealing acute ketamine effects and drowning as the causes. This revelation raised questions about Perry’s past claims of sobriety, especially given his struggles with addiction, which he discussed in his memoir ‘Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing’.

Perry’s continuous struggle

A close friend of Perry’s recently spoke to the British tabloid Daily Mail, stating that Perry had misled everyone about being clean, never actually achieving sobriety. “He lied to everyone about being clean,” the friend reportedly said. “He never was. It is very sad. You know, the biggest lie he told was probably to himself.”

The friend also reflected on Perry’s continuous battle with addiction. “He could be quite a manipulative person when it came to his struggles with using, but it was such a struggle, such a battle, and he battled every day to the end.”

‘A year sober’ said Perry

A year ago, Perry had confessed to being 18 months sober, following a journey that involved spending over nine million dollars on treatments and attending more than 6,000 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. In 2021, he also mentioned adopting a healthier lifestyle.

Perry, a celebrated figure in Hollywood, was commemorated in a private ceremony at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, attended by his ‘Friends’ co-stars Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, and Lisa Kudrow, who also paid tribute to their colleague and friend on social media.
