George Clooney reveals why he was resentful for years after losing a role to Brad Pitt: “I made it to the final audition”
The actor was working on television series when he found himself competing with Pitt for a role in Ridley Scott’s 1991 road movie.

George Clooney came close to landing the breakout role of J.D. in Thelma & Louise—but the part ultimately went to Brad Pitt. And according to Clooney, that decision left him bitter for years.
“I made it all the way to the final audition for Thelma & Louise. And damn it, Brad got it,” Clooney told The Times. At the time, Clooney was best known for his work on television, while Pitt’s performance in the 1991 film catapulted him into Hollywood stardom.

Clooney’s early career in TV
Reflecting on that period, Clooney recalled the stigma surrounding television actors in the early ’90s. “I was on TV, making a good living, but back then actors would say, ‘I’m really a movie actor who just happens to be doing television,’” he explained. “I didn’t watch Thelma & Louise for years, because I was mad.”
He admitted that Pitt’s success stung: “That role launched his film career. Before that, he was doing sitcoms and silly stuff. So when the chance came along that could’ve launched me instead—damn!”

From rivalry to friendship
Despite the initial resentment, Clooney and Pitt eventually became close friends and co-stars. They’ve shared the screen in hugely successful box office hits like Ocean’s Eleven and, more recently, Wolfs.
When Clooney finally watched Thelma & Louise, he realized Pitt had been the perfect choice. “It had to be that guy,” Clooney said. Over time, the two actors moved past the rivalry and built one of Hollywood’s most enduring friendships.
Clooney’s candid confession shows even Hollywood legends wrestle with missed opportunities—but also how time, perspective, and collaboration can turn old grudges into lasting friendships.
