Griselda star Sofía Vergara reveals new dating rule after Joe Manganiello split
On the US talk show Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Vergara explained that potential beaus must meet a new condition.
Sofía Vergara says she has imposed a new dating rule on herself in the wake of her split from fellow actor Joe Manganiello.
What is Vergara’s new romance rule?
Vergara, who stars as drug lord Griselda Blanco in the new Netflix series Griselda, revealed on US television this week that she won’t go out with any younger men who aren’t very close to her in age.
In an appearance on the talk show Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, the Modern Family star said: “To me, they can’t be younger than 50; I’m 51.”
The remark came in response to a question by fellow guest Alexia Nepola, who had asked Vergara whether she would date singer Bad Bunny.
“Well no let’s not go crazy, let’s not go crazy,” the Colombian replied. “He is younger than my son Manolo. Manolo is 32.”
Manolo’s father is Vergara’s first husband, Joe González, from whom she divorced in 1993.
Why won’t Vergara date men under 50?
While Vergara didn’t offer details on why she has set a minimum age limit on potential love interests, the background to her split from Manganiello, 47, suggests it is related to her desire not to have any more children.
In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El País earlier this month, Vergara said: “My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom. I feel it’s not fair to the baby.
“I respect whoever does it, but that’s not for me anymore. I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I’m ready to be a grandmother, not a mother.
“So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children. I’m almost in menopause; it’s the natural way of things.
“When my son becomes a dad, let him bring the baby to me for a while and then I’ll give it back to him and go on with my life; that’s what I have to do.”
Vergara and Manganiello confirmed in July 2023 that they were to divorce after seven years of marriage.
