How ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ will remember Lance Reddick

After prolific actor Lance Reddick died suddenly at the age of 60, his fellow cast and crew members in the upcoming installment of the John Wick franchise will be remembering him when the film premieres this Friday.

The film will be dedicated to the memory of Reddick, who played Charon, the concierge of the Continental Hotel in New York, who works for Winston, played by Ian McShane. Reddick brought an otherwise unassuming character to life, becoming a fan favorite.

“We are deeply saddened and heartbroken at the loss of our beloved friend and colleague Lance Reddick,” said John Wick director Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves, who plays the titular character, in a joint statement to Deadline.

“He was the consummate professional and a joy to work with. Our love and prayers are with his wife Stephanie, his children, family and friends. We dedicate the film to his loving memory. We will miss him dearly.”

Reddick played Charon in all four John Wick movies, famously wearing crisply tailored suits, and delivering lines with a charismatic smile. He becomes indebted to Wick after Wick saves his life, and becomes one of Wick’s strongest allies throughout the four films.

The new film takes a closer look at the friendship between Charon and Winston

For the fourth installment of the film, Reddick revealed in one of his last interviews how he and McShane worked together to further develop the friendship between Charon and Winston.

“We talked about [it] independently, and came to have a backstory that was very similar since we’ve talked about it,” Reddick explained to Screen Rant.

“But I think we’ve known each other for decades; probably met when he was in Africa, doing some MI6 work, and I was a teenager, not too well off. And one of us saved each other’s lives. And then he took me under his wing, and I’ve been with him ever since.”

In a later interview with CBR, Reddick went into further detail on the friendship between the two characters.

“One of the things that’s so interesting to me about our relationship is how well it plays in the first two films when we only communicate on the phone. So when we actually have all the scenes together, [especially] in the third film, it just feels so natural.”
