How Princess Diana snagged an epic Philadelphia Eagles jacket

Princess Diana might have been an Eagles fan

Update:
The funeral of Lady Di, one of the most watched events in history

With the Philadelphia Eagles set to face off against the Kansas City Chiefs in this Sunday’s Super Bowl, old pictures of Princess Diana sporting a varsity-style Philadelphia Eagles jacket have resurfaced.

The jacket was made specifically for the Princess and gifted to her by late Eagles statistician Jack Edelstein. According to Edelstein, he met the Princess of Wales during the funeral of Princess Grace of Monaco back in 1982.

In the Philadelphia Daily News Edelstein said, “She thought football was like soccer. She asked, ‘What are your colors?’ I said, ‘Green and silver.’ She said, ‘Those are my favorite colors.’”

Edelstein then promised to send the Princess a variety of Eagles merchandise, which included shirts, hats, shorts and, of course, the jacket.

“We also sent her a beautiful Eagles jacket, made for her. It was Leonard Tose’s idea. He never went second-class. She sent me a very nice note, how she’s been wearing them around.”

The jacket in particular Princess Diana wore to many different events and she did so more for fashion than to represent the Eagles.

“She was not necessarily an Eagles fan,” said Marnie Schneider from CBS Philadelphia, “but she did love the colors of the Philadelphia Eagles”.

A fashion icon

Even today, the Princess of Wales continues to impact fashion trends.

Her more glamorous looks remain influential on red carpets, magazine photoshoots and designer runway collections. On the other hand, her more casual outfits are being recreated by social media influencers.

“My strongest impression of her style was bumping into her at the Harbour Club,” said British designer Amanda Wakeley to the British Vogue retrospective. “She was in her exercise kit and she’s thrown on one of my cashmere sweatshirts with the satin cuffs on it. To me that was such a perfect image of her.”

Additionally, TV shows like ‘The Crown’ and films like ‘Spencer’ attempt to show more accurate replicas of her iconic wardrobe.

Princess Diana tragically passed away in a car crash in 1997.
