Update:

Does Netflix’s ‘Nonna’ have you eager to enjoy some Italian home cooking? Well, if you happen to be in Staten Island, you are in luck, since you can visit the real Enoteca Maria, which the movie is based on.

The film, which centers on family, motherhood, and loss, was released on the streaming platform on Mother’s Day in the US, May 9.

Is the movie based on a real story?

The film starring Vince Vaughn brings to our screens the life of Joe Scaravella. Scaravella and the character played by Vaughn share many experiences, though for dramatic and comedic effect, the fictional retelling fudges the details a bit. For instance, while the movie centers on the differences between the nonnas brought from four cities in Italy to work in the restaurant, the real-life Scaravella relied much more on the recipes he was passed down by his grandmother, following her death. Nevertheless, The Wrap reported that over the years, nonnas from Italy have joined his kitchen crew, but now he accepts grandmothers from other countries famous for their cuisine as well.

Joe opened his restaurant in 2007, following the loss of his grandmother, Domenica, and his mother Maria, which inspired the name of his emerging business: Enoteca Maria. The real-life Bruno, brought to life by Joe Manganiello, told The Wrap reports that he still visits the Enoteca Maria found on Hyatt Street, so if you keep your eyes pealed you might be able to spot him. peeled
