Joker 2: Folie à Deux already has a release date on digital platforms - When and where will it be available?
Five years of waiting for just one month in theaters. The film is deemed, by some, as one of the great disappointments of 2024.
We have another perfect film to celebrate Halloween. Just a week after Beetlejuice 2 confirmed it would be available for the Day of the Dead, now Joker 2: Folie à Deux has followed suit. The film, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, will be available on digital platforms starting October 29, though for rental only at first.
Was Joker 2 a flop?
After premiering in theaters on October 4, following over five years of anticipation (the original was also released on October 4, 2019), the box office performance has been disappointing enough that Warner has decided to cut its theatrical run short, ending it in less than a month. Note that full details of the digital platform rollout are yet to be advised.
As we mentioned in MeriStation’s review, Joker 2: Folie à Deux is one of the year’s biggest disappointments, but at the same time (and not mutually exclusive), it’s not a bad movie. It simply doesn’t give the audience what they expect and instead chooses to poke them in the eye. We explained it this way in the article titled, “If you think Joker 2: Folie à Deuxis bad, it’s because you didn’t understand it.”
In any case, this commercial flop didn’t come as a surprise to those involved. For example, the director went into hiding at a ranch, fearing the criticism after the premiere, and Warner and James Gunn must have also had their concerns, considering that Todd Phillips refused to take their calls during the filming of the movie. He wanted absolute creative freedom, with no interference in his vision… not even to warn him of what was to come.
Whether it’s good or bad and regardless of how much it’s liked, Joker 2: Folie à Deux is a movie worth watching to form your own opinion and reflect on it – especially with that daring ending that changes the entire meaning of the saga.
