LAFCA, the prestigious critics’ association, chooses the best film of the year and it is a clear Oscar contender
The Los Angeles Film Critics Association awards Paul Thomas Anderson’s thriller ahead of ‘The Secret Agent’.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association held its 51st annual awards this past weekend, once again cementing its reputation as one of the most reliable predictors of Oscar season. In a decisive vote, Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, One Battle After Another, was named Best Picture of 2025, adding yet another trophy to its growing list of accolades. With momentum building, the film is increasingly seen as a frontrunner heading into the Academy Awards.
The LA critics have a track record of aligning with Oscar outcomes. Just last year, they anticipated the triumph of Anora, while the Golden Globes went in a different direction, awarding The Brutalist.
For movie fans eager to catch Anderson’s new work, One Battle After Another is currently available to rent or buy on Prime Video and Apple TV, as well as through Movistar. The film will make its streaming debut on HBO Max on December 19 (EST), marking the first time it will be included in a subscription catalog.
The runner-up, The Secret Agent—a Brazilian political thriller earning strong critical buzz—has yet to premiere in theaters. Its US release is set for 2026.
