After winning the Record of the Year award at Sunday’s Grammy Awards for ‘About Damn Time’, Lizzo dedicated part of her speech to Beyoncé.

After giving various shout-outs to her family, team, and fans, the artist directed her attention to Beyoncé in the crowd, who was also nominated in the same category.

“Beyoncé, woo, in the fifth grade I skipped school to see you perform. My sister, she got me out of school, it was literature, I’m good. Where you at, Beyonce?? My eyes are wet.” she continues.

“You changed my life. You sang that gospel medley and the way you made me feel, I was like I want to make people feel this way with my music. So thank you so much! You clearly are the artist of our lives. I love you. God bless y’all.”

Lizzo’s Grammy history

This win marks Lizzo’s fourth Grammy Award win. At the 2020 Grammy Awards, she won for Best Pop Solo Performance for ‘Truth Hurts,’ Best Traditional R&B Performance for ‘Jerome,’ and Best Urban Contemporary Album for ‘Cus I Love You (Deluxe).’

Shouting out Prince

Queen Bey wasn’t the only artist Lizzo mentioned in her speech. She also touched on why she chose to make the uplifting music she does.

“Let me tell you something,” she started with. “This is so unexpected. Okay, now that I’m up here, and I’m calm, I want to dedicate this award to Prince.

“When we lost Prince, I decided to dedicate my life to making positive music and out loud, if my positivity bothers you, what’s wrong with you?” she continued.

“And this was at a time where positive music and feel good music wasn’t mainstream at that point, and I felt very misunderstood. I felt I was on the outside looking in, but I stayed true to myself because I wanted to make the world a better place so I had to be that change to make the world a better place.”

“And now I look around and there’s all these songs that are about loving our bodies and feeling comfortable in our skin and looking good, and I’m just so proud to be a part of it because in a world where there’s a lot of darkness, I’d like to believe that not only can people do good, but we just are good. We are good inherently,”
