Mariah Carey’s mother and sister die on the same day: How many siblings does she have?
A statement from the singer confirmed the deaths in a family that has been wrought with legal problems.
Mariah Carey had two siblings: her older sister Alison and an older brother named Morgan. Both her mother, Patricia Carey, and Alison, tragically passed away over the weekend on the same day.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend,” Carey said on Monday. “Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”
Mariah’s relationship with her siblings has been complex and often strained. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she described her interactions with both Alison and Morgan as fraught with difficulties, stating that it was “emotionally and physically safer” for her not to have contact with them at times.
Legal disputes amongst the family
Alison was involved in a legal dispute with Mariah over claims made in the memoir, which Alison alleged caused her emotional distress.
Morgan, the only brother, has also had a tumultuous relationship with Mariah. In March 2021, he filed a defamation lawsuit against Mariah, claiming that her memoir falsely portrayed him as violent and attempting to extort money from her.
