Martínez Brothers: “We make songs that talk about the game that life offers”

The Martínez Brothers—Álvaro, Borja, and Jaime—are three siblings who turned music into a shared language long before they even knew what that meant. As they tell AS, between guitars their father would leave around the house “so they were always within reach,” lullabies featuring covers of The Beatles or Alejandro Sanz, and a childhood shaped by creativity, music was part of their lives well before it became a formal project.

Today, that family bond has taken shape under a single name, Hermanos Martínez, bringing the three brothers together. The project began in 2017 with Álvaro and Borja, the two older siblings, though it paused for a time until 2024, when the youngest, Jaime, joined and completed the group.

We spoke with them about the release of their new single, “Volvería a elegirte,” (“I’d Choose You Again”) which centers on the idea of choosing that same someone every day, beyond romantic love, as a constant and conscious decision.

Growing up with music

You’ve been connected to music since childhood. How did Martínez Brothers begin as a project?

Jaime: Music has been with us since we were very young. Our father used to put us to sleep playing guitar, singing his versions of The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, or Alejandro Sanz. He would leave guitars around the house so music was always “within reach.”

My older brothers Álvaro and Borja launched Martínez Brothers in 2017, but later paused the project because of their studies. I joined in 2024.

A distinct identity and rooted sound

What sets you apart from other indie pop/rock projects right now?

Borja: There are amazing musical projects in the industry right now that inspire us. In terms of sound, our songs include a lot of folk elements, like the legüero drum that Jaime often plays and the dobro, a metal-cone guitar, that Álvaro brings in.

Álvaro: On a human level, being brothers gives us a special connection on stage. We can read each other very well during live shows, and little moments happen that would be hard to recreate if they were planned. Being brothers makes every concert feel like playing at home.

What’s the best part of working with your siblings, and what’s the most challenging?

Jaime: Imagine launching a project you’re passionate about, where you feel completely at home and comfortable, alongside two people who know and love you more than anyone else, your brothers. That’s definitely the best part. As for challenges, honestly none. After more than 25 years sharing a room, we basically have a master’s degree in living together.

“I’d Choose You Again”: Love as a decision

Your new single is “Volvería a elegirte.” In the teaser video, you talk about “choosing” as something even more important than love. What does that mean to you?

Borja: The song is about taking a moment to reflect on the decisions we’ve made and the choices we’ve taken. I wrote it for my fiancée, trying to express that I would choose her again every single day, just like the first day.

It’s about recognizing that love is not always easy. Sometimes you have to remind yourself of that original choice, saying, “I choose to love this person.” That’s why the song emphasizes choosing someone every day, even when it is harder. It’s about repeating to yourself, “I chose to love you, and that’s why I keep choosing you every day.”

What was the first phrase or idea that made you think, “This is a song”?

Jaime: We like to go with the flow. Each song develops differently. We usually get together to write, but sometimes one of us has an idea and quickly sketches it out. We also rely a lot on what we call the “goosebump test.” If a song gives us goosebumps, that’s it. We share ideas, impressions, chords, and things come together naturally.

Borja: In this case, the song came together very simply, with a catchy, easy-to-remember chorus. The goal was to show that loving can feel simple when you remember why you do it.

What their songs are about

What do your songs talk about?

Borja: Many of them include references to our childhood and moments we’ve lived through together. There are nods to our family, to our parents, especially to our mother, who is the most humble, thoughtful, kind, and beautiful person in the world.

Álvaro: Our songs are about focusing on the good, turning up the volume on life, letting go of the need to control everything, leaving the past behind, and starting fresh. They also touch on the idea of guardian angels, those people who show up in our lives even when we don’t deserve it. In the end, they are about the game life gives you.

Three brothers, one language

What does each of you bring to the group?

Jaime: Martínez Brothers wouldn’t exist without all three of us. We take turns singing in almost every song, without a fixed order, always trying to add whatever best enhances the music. Álvaro and Borja usually play guitar or piano, and I switch things up depending on the song, guitar, bass, or legüero.

What changes from your studio recordings to your live performances?

Álvaro: We love the slow, detailed process of producing each song in the studio. There are so many layers and so much care put into every single. It’s a unique experience for us with every track we create. We work hard to bring that same quality and freshness to our live shows, and if we succeed, it’s thanks to the professionals who support us on stage.

Is there a live moment that has particularly stayed with you?

Jaime: When you spot a family member, friends, or loved ones in the crowd during a song, you feel a special kind of support. And the first time you hear the audience singing your songs, that’s something we’ll never forget.

Looking ahead

Where would you like to see yourselves in five years?

Borja: Wherever our audience wants us to be. We want to keep creating songs that make people smile or feel at peace, and to keep enjoying this just like day one, the three of us together.

What would you say to someone who has just discovered your music?

Álvaro: Come in, get comfortable, and enjoy it. Dance, cry, and sing along as if you were at home.
