Not from Disney or Pixar: This Chinese movie just became the highest-grossing animated film of all time
The follow up to Ne Zha has already scooped US$1.7 billion and has beaten Inside Out 2 as the highest grossing animated film of all time.
Released on January 29 (2025) to coincide with the Chinese New Year, Ne Zha 2 is proving to be quite the blockbuster.
The Chinese animated fantasy adventure film written and directed by Jiaozi is the sequel to the 2019 film Ne Zha and is is loosely based on the novel Investiture of the Gods (Fengshen Yanyi).
Since its release just a few weeks ago, the film continues to break records. Like its 2019 predecessor, the film has received widespread critical acclaim and has already grossed US$1.7 billion, breaking multiple box-office records. It surpassed Inside Out 2 to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time and is the first non-American, non-English-language animated film to achieve this milestone. At present over 99% of the film’s takings have come from China.
The movie focuses on young boy with magic powers who tries to defend Chentangguan, a fortress town.
