Prince George, second heir to the throne, will have an important role at his grandfather, King Charles II’s royal coronation coming up on May 6.

What is Prince George’s coronation role?

Buckingham Palace announced that the little prince will be a Page of Honor for his grandfather the king at the historical ceremony. King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla will each have four Pages of Honor during the event, which will commence at Westminster Abbey, including a procession through the Abbey’s Nave, and back to the palace.

Prince George and three other boys, Lord Oliver Cholmondeley, Nicholas Barclay, and Ralph Tollemache, will attend the 74-year-old king at the coronation, while Camilla will be attended by her three grandsons, 14-year-old twin brothers Gus and Louis Lopes, Freddy Parker Bowles, and her great-nephew, Arthur Elliot.

Concerned but excited parents

Though Prince George’s parents, Prince William and Kate Middleton, were concerned about whether a big role in the coronation was too much responsibility for their nine-year-old son, they have ultimately decided Prince George could do it if he wants to.

A spokesperson for the Prince and Princess of Wales said that the couple is excited and delighted for their son, and have been careful not to put too much pressure on the boy.

“[The Waleses are] cognizant that he is old enough to understand what’s going on,” the royal source told People in an interview.

“His parents are very excited and delighted that he is a page,” the Waleses’ spokesperson continued. “It’s something that his parents have thought long and hard about and are very much looking forward to — and I’m sure George is, too.”

The source elaborated that Prince William and Princess Kate were particularly concerned about Prince George returning to a normal week at school, as the coronation will probably be a much-talked about subject at school.
