Record breaking moments at the 2023 Oscars

History was made Sunday evening at the 95th Academy Awards in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

American costume designer Ruth E. Carter won the Oscar award for Best Costume Design for her work on the film ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, making history as the first and only Black woman to win two Oscars.

Elsewhere, Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh won the trophy for Best Actress for her leading role in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, becoming the first Asian woman to win the category.

The first Black woman to win two Oscars

Ruth E. Carter won her first Oscar in 2019 for her work designing the costumes in Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’, becoming the first Black person to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design.

At the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday night, Carter accepted her second Oscar award for the film’s sequel, ‘Wakanda Forever’ and acknowledged her late mother, who recently died at the age of 101, and Chadwick Boseman, the late ‘Black Panther’ star.

“Nice to see you again,” Carter said as she opened her speech. “Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the superhero that is a Black woman. She endures, she loves, she overcomes, she is every woman in this film.”

“She is my mother. This past week, Mable Carter became an ancestor. This film prepared me for this moment. Chadwick, please take care of Mom.”

“I share this with many dedicated artists whose hands and hearts helped manifest the costumes of Wakanda and Talokan. This is for my mother. She was 101.”

The first Asian woman to win Best Actress

Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to win Best Actress at the 2023 Oscars as she accepted the award in the category for her leading role in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.

The milestone award was presented by Jessica Chastain and Halle Berry, who made history in 2002 when she became the first Black woman to win the Best Actress category at the Academy Awards.

Yeoh gave an inspirational speech to fans young and old as she accepted the award.

“For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight,” Yeoh said, “This is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that, dream big, and dreams do come true. And ladies don’t let anybody tell you you are ever past your prime.”

Yeoh also acknowledged “all the moms in the world,” especially her own mother, watching from home in Malaysia.

“Because they are really the superheroes. And without them none of us would be here tonight,” Yeoh continued. “And also to my extended family in Hong Kong where I started my career. Thank you for letting me stand on your shoulders, giving me a leg up, so I can be here today.”

“This is history in the making,” the actress said.
