Rick Ross releases Drake diss: when will Kendrick reply?

Drake kept the fire burning under hip-hop as he sent shots back at Kendrick on his track “Push Ups”. Here’s the latest.

The world of hip-hop is undergoing a surprise - and very much needed - surge of excitement and interest. J Cole may have apologised to Kendrick but the fires are still burning in the rap world, with Drake (kind of) coming out and releasing his new song, entitled ‘Push Ups’.

The recipient? A certain Kendrick Lamar. Oh, and Rick Ross. And Metro Boomin. And The Weeknd. And Future. And your pet dog (probably). The list goes on.

Rick Ross was the first to reply to Aubrey, who spat fire over a ludicrous beat that told Ross “I might take your latest girl and cuff her like I’m Ricky / Can’t believe he jumpin’ in, this n-a turnin’ fifty.”

Ross didn’t take time to reply, putting out a delightfully elegant song called “Champagne Moments”, in which he spits that people are “leakin’ they records when we speakin’ directly / If we keepin’ it gangsta, when you see me you check me” in reference to the fact that Drake’s track got leaked and has not, as of yet, been officially released. Check out the lyrics below...

Rick Ross 'Champagne Moments' lyrics:

[Intro: Jessica Gomes]
Maybach Music

[Verse 1: Rick Ross]
Fish tanks and marble floors, livin' big and bad
N-as laugh until they hit with my official jab
Crack smoke is the exhaust from my pen and pad
Ghostwriters, they get to floss what you could’ve had
Record label takin' a loss, are you in your bag?
You a worker wantin' to chart, don’t make me laugh
Get to mine, tell by my watch, this a different time
Livin' fine, I'm gettin' high as your sh*t decline
Who believes he movin' keys in his Louie Vs?
Run up on you and snatch your chain, watch you b*tches bleed
Feel the pain and just describe when you really ride
Either you n-as gettin' money or ready to die
B-I-G, give a f*ck if you Chi-Ali
You got it and you keep it tucked if you be by me
Do the job, better known as the Charles Schwab
Double Rs spread through the yard, and I swear to God

[Chorus: Rick Ross]
Pop a Perc for the 'ville, go and count me a mil
Kill you n-as for free, do it all for the thrill
N-as leakin' they records when we speakin’ directly
If we keepin’ it gangsta, when you see me you check me
White boy, I see you
I see you, yeah, check

[Verse 2: Rick Ross]
Gettin' bullied, don’t walk up on me 'cause the clip is fully
N-as pussy, don't want to push me, I'm like, "Really, would he?"
Like his moves, but he never had to fight in school
Always ran, another n-a had to write your grooves
Flow is copy-and-paste, Weezy gave you the juice
Another white boy at the park wanna hang with the crew
Pulitzer Prize winner switchin’ up like dyed denim
Get incentives for all the killings while we ride rentals
Look me right in my face, he beginning to shake
Told you n-as "Stay schemin'", I predicted my fate
Got more money than you, f*ck you want me to say?
Fifty mil for the crib, where you want me to stay?
I can shoot up the block, I got pictures to paint
Let you DM my hoe, but got b*tches you can't
Let you get on my songs, it was good for your face
Now b*tch n-a, it's on, ain't no room for debate

[Chorus: Rick Ross]
Pop a perc for the 'ville, go and count me a mil
Kill you n-as for free, do it all for the thrill
N-as leakin' they records when we speakin' directly
If we keepin' it gangsta, when you see me you check me

[Outro: Rick Ross, Jessica Gomes & Drake]
By the way, I got a lot of respect for a lot of rappers, but I got one guy, he's my favorite person to rap with on any song, his name is Rick Ross
Maybach Music
You ain't never want to be a nigga anyway, nigga

That's why you had a operation to make your nose smaller than your father nose, n-a
I unfollowed you, n-a, 'cause you sent the motherf*cking cease-and-desist to French Montana, n-a
You sent the police, n-a, hatin' on my dog project
That wasn't the same white boy that I seen, n-a, when we were makin' them early records, n-a
When you were happy to be around n-as, seein' n-as holdin' them sticks
Yeah
You owe motherf*cking Stunna your life, n-a
Give Weezy some more money, n-a
Give Rap-A-Lot some more money, n-a
White boy
Yeah, biggest, it's Rozay, n-a
We can do it how you wanna do it, where you wanna do it, anytime you wanna do it, I'm ready
I'm ready, white boy, huh
I know you got your Dockers on with no underwear, white boy
Yeah, you had that surgery, that six-pack gone
That's why you wearin' that funny shit at your show, you can't hide it, n-a
White boy

What bars did Drake cut out from the final version of ‘Push Ups’?

The ‘official’ version of Drake’s song is almost a minute shorter than the original leaked version, with various bars not making the cut.

While the outro is different and the song seems to end only be being cut off, suggesting Drake has more weaponry, one line in particular stands out. “Worry ‘bout whatever goin’ on with you and- (Uh)” was changed to “spend that little cheque you got to stay up out my business”. Nothing has been confirmed as to who Drake was going to mention before quickly deciding against it. Taking away this line is also the only entire complete line in the main verses that has not made the final version, further sending the rumour mill a-spinning.

Rick Ross, for his part, fired back in the lyrics (above), revealing an unconfirmed secret that Drake got a nose job because he didn’t want to have the same nose as his dad. It’s going to get dirty.

What did Drake say about Taylor Swift and the ‘Swifties’?

Yes, Swifties. Drake mentioned the Queen. Well, in fact, it wasn’t that bad, he only mentioned you. And you’d do anything for Taylor, right?

The rapper said “Maroon 5 need a verse, you better make it witty / Then we need a verse for the Swifties”, referencing Kendrick’s ventures into pop music, as the Compton rapper famously featured on Swift’s song ‘Bad Blood’. Don’t worry, the ‘One Dance’ singer didn’t go any further. We don’t need another Swift album based on her getting upset.

Is Kendrick Lamar going to reply?

Speaking of getting dirty and personal, Drake also mentioned Whitney, the name on Kendrick’s wife. While Drake probably used Whitney Houston as the subject of his line given the context surrounding the bar, it has not gone unnoticed that K Dot’s wife’s name remains there.

Lamar, given his discography’s fame coming from it’s calculated, intricate, subtle yet powerful messages and lyrics, as well as his unique voice and flow, would be down right stupid not to have ammo to go back at Drake, especially since the Compton rapper was the person who fired the first shot.

As a result, we can expect to hear Kendrick’s reply soon enough. Whether that is in a few hours, days or weeks is yet to be seen, but if Rick Ross has already hit back, expect Kung Fu Kenny to come flying in with a roundhouse kick of his own.
