Earning more than $636 million domestically, and $1.4 billion worldwide, ‘Barbie’ by Greta Gerwig became the most successful film of 2023 in the United States. The live-action of the Mattel plastic doll, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, made history by being the best film debut for a film directed by a woman in the history of cinema.

In promotion of her twelfth studio album, ‘Las Mujeres Ya no Lloran’, Shakira gave an interview for the magazine Allure, where he shared her particular opinion on the Oscar-winning film. While Gerwig’s film stood out for its vindication and femininity, Shakira believes that the film may have the wrong message for society.

What did Shakira have to say about the film?

According to what was expressed by the interpreter of ‘Día de Enero’, both her children and her “absolutely hated” the film, they even felt that it was, to a certain extent, “emasculating.”

“I am raising two children. I want them to feel powerful respecting women too. I like pop culture when it tries to empower women without depriving men of their ability to be men, to protect and provide too,” expressed Shakira.

“I believe in giving women all the tools and the confidence that we can do everything without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I believe that men have a purpose in society and women also have another purpose. We complement each other and that complement should not be lost,” she added.

Paradoxically Shakira revealed that, if it weren’t for “the power dynamic” that exists in culture, she would not be indebted to her beauty ideals. .

“Of course, from time to time I would put on mascara and straighten my hair. I felt sexy and used that raw sensuality many times. times on stage as a form of expression. But I trust in other abilities more than just beauty”, she concluded.

Does the Barbie movie really hate men?

It can be argued that the film actually challenges restrictive gender roles that can be tough on guys too. Ken, for example, starts out feeling pressured to be this perfect, emotionless hunk. But Barbie helps him break free from those expectations. The movie argues that unhealthy stereotypes hurt everyone. By showing Ken finding happiness when he can be himself, it suggests that men can benefit from a world that celebrates individuality over outdated ideas of masculinity.
