Taylor Hawkins’ son, Shane Hawkins, has joined Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters for a performance in memory of his late father, Taylor Hawkins, who tragically died in a car accident in March 2022.

Shane Hawkins has joined the band twice before, at tribute concerts to his father in London and Los Angeles.

Playing ‘I’ll Stick Around’

The younger Hawkins appeared onstage with the band at the Boston Calling festival on May 26 to play the drums for their song ‘I’ll Stick Around’.

“We have one more drummer that’s going to come up and play with us tonight,” Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl told the crowd before he and his bandmates launched into the song.

“Let me tell you, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone hit the drums as hard as this person,” Grohl continued into the microphone. “But beyond that, he’s a member of our family, and he needs to be here tonight with all of us.”

“I think it makes sense that he’s going to come up and play with us tonight. Ladies and gentlemen, would you please welcome, Mr. Shane Hawkins on the drums,” the singer announced. “How about a song with one of my favorite drummers in the world? Please welcome Shane Hawkins.”

At another point during the show, Taylor Hawkins’ whole family was honored by the band.

I’m gonna do it for Taylor’s family. And I’m gonna do it for Taylor. Because we used to sing it together,” Grohl shared before the band started playing ‘Cold Day in the Sun’.

The new drummer

The band has named Josh Freese as the band’s new drummer moving forward, who was present at the show and well-welcomed by the crowd. The band even said they tour would not be possible without him.

The new drummer wore a shirt that read, “Fingers crossed for the new guy.”
