Update:

Taylor Swift has announced the upcoming release of her next studio album, which the singer-songwriter says is to be entitled: The Life of a Showgirl.

“This is my brand-new album”

Swift confirmed the news in a teaser for her forthcoming appearance on the “New Heights” podcast, which is co-hosted by her boyfriend, the NFL star Travis Kelce.

In the short clip, the 35-year-old can be seen removing a blurred out album cover from a briefcase, before telling Travis and his brother, the retired football player Jason: “This is my brand-new album: The Life of a Showgirl”.

The announcement of the new record, which will be Swift’s 12th studio album, was posted at 12.12 a.m. E.T. today, August 12. The news also went up at the same time on the 14-time Grammy winner’s official website.

Swift’s full appearance on “New Heights” is to drop on Wednesday. Her most recent album, The Tortured Poets Department, was released in April last year.

What do we know about The Life of a Showgirl?

Although little is known so far about the content of Swift’s latest album, she has offered up some apparent clues.

On her official Spotify channel, the musician posted a 22-track playlist of songs from her career catalogue so far, entitled: “And baby, that’s show business for you”.

As is pointed out by Variety’s Steven J. Howoritz, eagled-eyed ‘Swifities’ have noticed that all 22 songs were produced by Max Martin and Shellback, “suggesting that they could play a pivotal role in the new project”.

And as is noted by Parade’s Devon Forward, there is speculation that The Life of a Showgirl could include a collaboration between Swift and the singer Sabrina Carpenter.

Talk of a Swift-Carpenter collab was fuelled by a post on Monday on the official Taylor Nation Instagram profile, which included a photo of the two performing together during one of Swift’s Eras Tour concerts.

When is The Life of a Showgirl out?

The release date of The Life of a Showgirl has not yet been confirmed, but fans can already pre-order the record.

Swift back in control of catalogue

The announcement of Swift’s 12th studio album comes two and a half months after she regained control of her entire back catalogue, by buying back the master recordings of her first six albums from investment firm Shamrock Capital.

“I’m trying to gather my thoughts into something coherent, but right now my mind is just a slideshow. As a flashback sequence of all the times I daydreamed about, wished for, and pined away for a chance to get to tell you this news,” Swift said in statement on her website at the end of May.

“I almost stopped thinking it could happen, after 20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away. But that’s all in the past now.”
