In a year of cinema-craziness seen in the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon, few thought there was space for another social media-fuelled flick to get people swarming back to the movies. With many big-budget movies pushed back to 2024 in response to the writing and actors’ strikes, what could possibly come along?

Well, Taylor Swift could.

Using footage from her ongoing Eras tour, so massive that government introduced extra rules to prevent fans being overcharged, Swift and director Sam Wrench announced the concert movie on 31 August.

If analysts thought it would not be enough time to drum up support, then they were wrong. Though ever-so-slightly missing some calls for a $100 million opening, off just a $20 million budget, the Eras Tour concert film netted a mighty $92.8 million in its first three days of release.

“The film’s debut is an undeniable tentpole-level success despite the challenges of predicting what it might achieve,” said Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at BoxOffice.com. “Swift, her fans, and theatrical exhibition should all be celebrating the results.”

It is the second-highest domestic opener ever in October, behind Joker (2019).

Could this have reached even higher?

Most likely: yes.

Short-notice previews and odd Friday showing times certainly hampered its performance; it made just $2.8 million in previews. Furthermore, it opened in 3,855 theaters in the US, 600 less than there were for Joker.

There are no mid-week showings so predicting the box office future is difficult as well.

The Eras Tour’s theatrical run is scheduled to end 5 November, though if demand is great it could be extended.
