The supernatural world of ‘The Conjuring’ is set to return in the form of a new series. The news comes after Warner Bros. Discovery announced today that they are combining the streaming libraries of HBO Max and Discovery+ and calling it Max.

Along with their rebranded name, Warner Bros. Discovery also announced a number of new series currently in development, including a new ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel series, and a new ‘The Big Bang Theory’ spinoff series.

Who will be working on the new series?

Peter Safran, who produced ‘The Conjuring’ movies, will come on as executive producer, potentially joined by James Wan who directed the first two ‘Conjuring’ movies and produced seven movies in ‘The Conjuring’ universe.

Wan is reportedly in talks with Max about how he will contribute to the upcoming series.

No plot details were given by Max, only that the new series will be set in the world established by the movies.

What is ‘The Conjuring’ universe?

The three main ‘Conjuring’ movies follow paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) as they travel around the world investigating paranormal activities and helping families who are haunted by spirits.

The three movies are joined by the ‘Annabelle’ series of horror movies, ‘The Nun’, and ‘The Curse of La Llorona’, to make up what is known as ‘The Conjuring’ universe.

‘The Nun’ will have a sequel released in September, increasing the universe’s movie count to nine.

The full list of movies in the franchise are:

  • The Conjuring (2013)
  • Annabelle (2014)
  • The Conjuring 2 (2016)
  • Annabelle: Creation (2017)
  • The Nun (2018)
  • The Curse of La Llorona (2019)
  • Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
  • The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
  • The Nun 2 (2023)

When will ‘The Conjuring’ series be released?

The new series has been in some form of development since at least 2021. Safran previously stated that “some more long-form stories that would be better told over eight episodes or eight hours as opposed to just a two-hour movie.

“We’ve definitely explored it and are considering some. I think it becomes even more likely now that HBO Max exists because we can do it all in-house.

With the series freshly announced, a release date has yet to be formally announced.
