The end of the Sussexes? Meghan and Harry face their tensest moment yet
The author of an explosive book on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex says of Harry and Meghan: “He doesn’t understand where she’s coming from”.

A royal biographer has claimed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reached a “crisis” point.
Tom Bower, a former BBC journalist who wrote a 2022 book about the breakdown in Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the British royal family, has told The Mirror that the couple are struggling to see eye to eye over the former Suits star’s desire to be a “billionaire celebrity”.
“He doesn’t understand where she’s coming from”
“They have a crisis,” Bower said, as he also revealed that Harry is now considering trying to patch things up with his family.
“Meghan wants to be a billionaire celebrity and Harry doesn’t understand that world, other than [understanding that] Meghan wants to be famous.
“He’s spent his whole life never having a penny in his pocket. He’s never regularly travelled on the Tube, never had to worry about having a car or a job.
“So he doesn’t understand where she’s coming from, which is that she worked phenomenally hard, struggled hard, and was constantly humiliated, and wants the security of finance and status.
“She hasn’t got the status she craves, she hasn’t got the pulling power."
Meghan recently released the lifestyle TV series With Love, Meghan on Netflix, and has also brought out a new podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder.
“Zero chance of reconciliation”
In his interview with The Mirror, Bower continued: “Harry’s thinking is of reconciliation [with the British royal family]. That’s just totally unrealistic.
“There is zero chance of reconciliation because there is irreconcilable anger on the part of William and Kate.”
Bower was speaking ahead of his planned release of a second book on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s “amazing story”. “I’ve got a lot of new material”, he said.
Harry and Meghan walked away as senior royals in 2020
In January 2020, Harry and Meghan announced their decision to step back as senior British royals.
In a statement on Instagram, the Sussexes spoke of a desire to “raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter”.
Pledging to divide their time between the U.K. and North America, Harry and Meghan then moved to California to bring up Archie, who had been born in May 2019. Their daughter, Lilibet, was born in the U.S. in June 2021.
“A pretty nasty experience”
In his 2023 memoir Spare, Harry laid bare the extent of the deterioration in his relationship with brother William, the Prince of Wales, in the wake of his 2018 marriage to Meghan.
Harry said animosity between the siblings even led to a physical confrontation at one point, revealing that William “grabbed me by the collar” and “knocked me to the floor”.
In a 60 Minutes interview with the journalist Anderson Cooper in January 2023, Harry described the incident as a “pretty nasty experience”.
