From fake urns to fake eggs, celebrities over the years have occasionally used the annual Oscars’ red carpet to pull out the craziest theatrics and performances, ensuring fans of the show will remember them for years to come.

As the film industry’s biggest names gear up to attend this year’s annual Academy Awards, let’s take a look back at the most outrageous moments from previous Oscar Red Carpets.

‘The Dictator’

In 2012, Sacha Baron Cohen was focusing on the promotion of his movie ‘The Dictator.’ Although the movie received no Oscar nominations that year, Cohen used the opportunity to show up in character.

Showing up in full costume, carrying an urn with what he described as the ashes of Kim Jonh II and two fictional military assistants on both arms. Cohen proceeded to spill the fictional ashes, which were actually pancake mix all over TV host Ryan Seacrest’s Burberry suit.

Surprisingly, The Academy took no offense to the prank and went on to nominate Cohen for Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay in 2021 for his work on the ‘Borat’ sequel and ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7.’ Cohen attended the red carpet with his wife Isla Fisher this time, in their regular clothes.

Co-Creators of South Park

In 1999 the movie, ‘South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut’ managed to grab one Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for the track ‘Blame Canada.’ To celebrate Co-creators of the ‘South Park’ franchise Trey Parker and Matt Stone wore their best to the Oscars’ red carpet that year.

The duo arrived in two dresses that looked incredibly reminiscent of Jennifer Lopez’ iconic green Versace gown worn to the Grammy’s that year, and Gwyneth Paltrow’s pink Ralph Lauren gown worn to the ceremony a year prior.

In a 2005 Interview, Parker explains how their wardrobe choices might be why the two were never invited back to the Oscars.

“I think we’re just not really welcome there anymore,” Parker said. “I think it was before Team America. When we wore the dresses there, there were Academy members that were super not happy with that.”

Björk’s swan dress

Singer Björk has always been known for her out-of-the-box music and fashion choices, and her appearance on the 2001 Oscars red carpet was no exception. The singer wore a swan dress and proceeded to law a fake egg on the red carpet prior to the award show

The Icelandic singer was nominated that year for Best Original Song for ‘I’ve Seen it all’ from the movie ‘Dancing In The Dark,’ in which she also starred.

At the time the outrageous outfit caught the attention of numerous fashion critics with the late Joan Rivers, claiming “The girl should be put into an asylum,’ for her insane fashion experiment.
