The Spanish-language band critical of Donald Trump that could make Rock & Roll Hall of Fame history: “the most popular and influential Latin rock band of all time”
Maná, a band that has been highly critical of Donald Trump, could become the first Spanish-language group inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, located on Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio, could make history once again. This year, Maná, a band that hails from Mexico but is beloved all over the world, could become the first Spanish-language group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
From “Rayando el Sol” to “Oye Mi Amor,” Maná needs little introduction to fans. As the most successful band in Latin American history, induction into the Hall of Fame would be another accomplishment in a long line of awards, tributes, and prizes. Since the release of its debut album in 1986, the band has released nine albums and sold over 25 million copies. Fans still cannot get enough, with the band averaging more than 16 million listens on Spotify each month.
Maná's anti-Trump record
The band, which formed in Guadalajara, Mexico, has not shied away from weighing in on American politics, particularly in the age of Donald Trump. Following Trump’s announcement that he would run for president in 2015, where he said that Mexico was “not sending its best” and described migrants from the country’s southern neighbor as “rapists” and “drug traffickers,” Maná released a song titled “Somos Más Americanos,” which translates to “We Are More American.”
The song is more pertinent than ever as the Trump administration engages in the largest mass deportation operation in decades. The song begins with this verse:
Ya me gritaron mil veces / They yelled at me a thousand times
Que me regrese a mi tierra / That I should return to my homeland
Porque aquí no quepo yo / Because I don’t fit here
Quiero recordarle al gringo / I want to remind the gringo that
Yo no crucé la frontera / It wasn’t I that crossed the border
La frontera me cruzó / The border crossed meAmérica nació libre / America was born free
El hombre la dividió / Man divided it.
The song continues, highlighting the ways in which anti-immigrant sentiment negates the history of the continent and the redrawing of the lines between Mexico and the United States.
Ellos pintaron la raya / They drew the line
Para que yo la brincara / So that I wouldn’t cross
Y me llaman invasor / And then call me an invader
Es un error bien marcado / It’s a well-marked error
Nos quitaron ocho estados / They took eight states from us
Quién es aquí el invasor / Who is really the invader?
Soy extranjero en mi tierra / I am a foreigner in my own land
Y no vengo a darles guerra / I don’t come to bring war
Soy hombre trabajador / I am a hardworking man.
Maná also didn’t stay silent during the 2024 campaign either. When reggaetonero Nicky Jam endorsed Donald Trump, the group did not stay silent.
The post, which read “Maná no trabaja con racistas” (Maná does not work with racists), explained the decision to pull the song “De Pies a Cabeza,” which they collaborated on with Nicky Jam, from all streaming platforms after he endorsed Donald Trump. “Over the last thirty years, Maná has supported and defended the rights of Latinos in the world,” said the band’s members. “There is no business or promotion that means more than the dignity of our people.”
Days before the 2024 election, the band uploaded a photo with Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband.
The band correctly noted that the “election was in the hands of Latino” voters and thanked the vice president for including them in her historic campaign.
Maná forms part of an extremely talented group of musicians, including Bad Company, Outcast, Oasis, Mariah Carrey, the White Strips, and other deserving candidates. The 2025 inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be announced in April. Last year, inductees included Cher, the Dave Matthews Band, and Big Mama Thorton.
