‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ hit a big milestone over the weekend, becoming one of only 19 films to surpass the $500 million mark at the domestic box office.

In what was its fifth weekend at the box office, the Illumination film earned $18.5 million to finish in second place behind ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3′, which brought in $116 million.

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ has been a huge success

The numbers show just how big of a success the film has been since its release on April 5, 2023.

At the time of writing, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ is the highest-grossing movie of the year in North America with $518 million. It’s also the highest-grossing film globally, earning $1.15 billion.

It also surpassed ‘Toy Story 4′ ($1.07 billion) to become the fifth-biggest animated movie of all time.

The film follows Mario and Luigi as they are sucked into the mystical Mushroom Kingdom. They are joined by Princess Peach as they look to stop Bowser from achieving total domination.

The film, which features the likes of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black, earned $204 million in its first five days of release. That was enough to give it the biggest opening weekend of the year, as well as the second-biggest debut ever for an animated movie.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3′ kicks off summer movie season

Elsewhere at the box office, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3′ had a strong opening weekend.

The third film in the franchise earned $114 million, making it the second-biggest opening weekend of the year behind ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’, which raked in $146 million.

Despite the big returns so far for ‘Guardians 3′, the figure comes in just below expectations, as the film was expected to bring in close to the $120 million mark.

It also means the film comes in behind its predecessor, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2″, which earned $146 million at the box office when it debuted backing 2017.
