Shakira and Fuerza Regida champion the cause of the working class and deliver a message to bad bosses in their new music video for the collaborative single “El Jefe,” which translates to “The Boss.”

Shakira’s lyrics convey, “You want to escape the neighborhood, you possess all the qualities to become a millionaire, expensive tastes, the mindset, you’re just missing a decent salary,” set against a lively, acoustic guitar-driven melody. Jesus Ortiz Paz, the frontman of Fuerza Regida, joins in with, “Being poor is tough; my mom always told me that education would secure everything, but I studied and nothing changed.”

In the video, Shakira and Fuerza Regida members depict the struggles and endeavors of the working class, including a scene where their heads are displayed on silver platters for men in suits. Shakira herself appears in a striking all-red outfit, riding a horse and participating in a dance celebration alongside Fuerza Regida. The video also features a cameo from songwriter-producer Edgar Barrera, who is the most-nominated artist at the Latin Grammys this year.

This new song and video release follows Shakira’s career-spanning performance at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on September 12, where she performed her timeless hits, including “She Wolf” and “Hips Don’t Lie,” and received MTV’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, becoming the first South American artist to do so.

Shakira, alongside Karol G, leads as the most-nominated female artist at this year’s Latin Grammys. She has been consistently releasing popular singles, with her latest being “Copa Vacía,” featuring Manuel Turizo. The Colombian singer and Latin Grammys veteran is nominated for Record of the Year for her contribution to “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” and she also has three Song of the Year nominations for “TQG,” “Acróstico,” and once more for “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.”
