Chance Perdomo, who has died at the age of 27, was a BAFTA-nominated actor who had risen to prominence with roles on major TV series. Most notably, the American-born Briton appeared in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and Amazon’s Gen V, a spin-off of the satirical superhero series The Boys.

What were Perdomo’s roles on Sabrina and Gen V?

A supernatural horror series based on the comic books of the same name, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina starred Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman, a half-witch, half-human teenager. According to Netflix, Sabrina “has to make a choice between the witch world of her family and the human world of her friends”.

Perdomo featured throughout the series’ four-season run between 2018 and 2020, turning in what Vox described as a “smoothly charming” performance as Sabrina’s cousin, the English warlock Ambrose Spellman.

On Gen V, whose first season was released on Amazon Prime Video in September, Perdomo played Andre Anderson, a student who possesses a superpower that allows him to use magnetism to manipulate the world around him. The series, praised by RogerEbert.com’s Kaiya Shunyata as “a fun and biting coming-of-age drama”, was renewed for a second season in October.

BAFTA nod for “beautiful” performance in BBC drama

Perdomo’s TV debut had come in 2017, in the Children’s BBC adaptation of Jacqueline Wilson’s book Hetty Feather.

The following year, he was nominated for best actor honours at the BAFTA Awards, for his performance as Jerome Rogers in the BBC drama film Killed by My Debt. His portrayal of Rogers, a real-life British courier who committed suicide after being pursued for traffic fines that had escalated to over $1,000, was described by the Guardian TV critic Sam Wollaston as “beautiful, [and] utterly believable”.

On the big screen, Perdomo appeared as Landon Gibson in the romantic dramas After We Fell (2021), After Ever Happy (2022) and After Everything (2023), three instalments in a series of five films based on Anna Todd’s After novels.

Tributes paid to Perdomo, an “enthusiastic force of nature”

Perdomo’s death in a motorcycle accident was confirmed on Saturday, his publicist Rachel Hunt revealing that no-one else was involved in the incident. In a statement issued to media outlets, Hunt said of the actor: “His passion for the arts and insatiable appetite for life was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth will carry on in those who he loved dearest. We ask to please respect the family’s wish for privacy as they mourn the loss of their beloved son and brother.”

Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television described themselves as “devastated” by Perdomo’s death, while the producers of Gen V said: “We can’t quite wrap our heads around this. For those of us who knew him and worked with him, Chance was always charming and smiling, an enthusiastic force of nature, an incredibly talented performer, and more than anything else, just a very kind, lovely person.

Even writing about him in the past tense doesn’t make sense. We are so sorry for Chance’s family, and we are grieving the loss of our friend and colleague. Hug your loved ones tonight.”
