A passionate activist dedicated to the care of horses and head of the Cuacolandia shelter, the death of Elena Larrea has taken her followers by surprise.

Known for activism on behalf of the care of horses and the creation of Cuacolandia, a shelter in Puebla, The death of Elena Larrea has come as a complete shock and a blow to those who are dedicated to care in the equine industry.

Cuacolandia issues a statement, upon the death of Elena Larrea

Following the confirmation of her death, fans of Elena Larrea immediately took to social media where they offered condolences and thoughts on a young life cut short. Loved by many, Larrea was a fervent fighter in the war against animal cruelty and even managed to score several victories, including the passing of legislation against bestiality, something she achieved alongside the Animalist Movement of Puebla (MAP ). Following her untimely passing, the Cuacolandia shelter - her own creation - released a statement in which her cause of death was also acknowledged.

“With deep regret, we inform you of the departure of Elena Larrea, president and founder of Cuacolandia, who, unfortunately, yesterday, Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at 3:30 p.m., died due to a pulmonary thrombosis that caused a clot in her lung,” the letter stated.

Cuacolandia will continue to protect horses

If there is one positive note in the tragedy, it’s that the shelter made it clear that work will continue despite the tragic passing of its founder. Indeed, Cuacolandia will continue to agitate for the better treatment of horses.

“We will remember and continue working for everything that she bravely promoted from this foundation. We will promote her legacy and love so that our cuacos, donkeys, and mules can live in freedom and in adequate conditions in Mexico and in, this, our sanctuary for horses rescued from abuse and abandonment,” the statement said. “We reiterate our heartfelt condolences to the entire Cuacolandia family as well as the Larrea family and Elena’s close friends, who fought tirelessly for animal rights,” it added.

Governor of Puebla acknowledges the death of Elena Larrea

Through his Facebook account, Sergio Salomón, governor of the state of Puebla, shared his condolences following the death of Elena.

“I deeply regret the death of Elena Larrea, a tireless fighter for the defense of animal welfare. The rescue of thousands of horses in conditions of abuse leaves testimony of their life and work. On behalf of the Government of Puebla, we extend our solidarity hug to your family and friends,” the publication began.

Solomon also emphasized that his government will do its best to fight for the well-being of the horses that are in the shelter. “We inform that through the Ministry of the Environment, we will guarantee the protection of the specimens found in Cuacolandia, derived from IBA procedures. Likewise, we will provide all the necessary help so that other horses are cared for by the authorities that rescued them as well as the rest of the horses, prioritizing their well-being at all times,” he added.
