Taylor Swift leads the way in terms of nominations but won’t be performing at the ceremony in New York on Wednesday.
The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards are taking place at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York on Wednesday, September 11 having been moved back a day to avoid clashing with the presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris (on Tuesday, September 10).
Few will be surprised to learn that Taylor Swift leads the way in terms of nominations, with the 10 she has received including Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Artist of the Year and Best Pop Artist. The “Shake It Off” singer won a record nine prizes in 2023 and could, in theory, go one better this time around.
Mainly thanks to his collaboration with Swift on “Fortnight,” which is up for prizes in eight categories, Post Malone is the second most nominated artist with nine. Sabrina Carpenter, Eminem and Ariana Grande are all up for six awards, and SZA and Megan Thee Stallion have five nominations each.

2024 MTV Video Music Awards performers
Of those artists, Eminem, Carpenter and Megan Thee Stallion, who will also host the show, will be performing at the ceremony, with Slim Shady announced as the opening act on Monday.
They will be joined on stage by “Señorita” collaborators Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes, Colombian reggaeton sensation Karol G, rapper LL Cool J and veteran rock star Lenny Kravitz, among others.

Katy Perry will also be performing as the latest recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, presented to artists for their “outstanding contributions” and “profound impact” on music videos and popular culture. Since 2013, winners of the award, who are announced in advance, are invited to sing a medley of their hits before their acceptance speech.
In addition to the main show, Jessie Murphy and Teddy Swims will be performing on the Extended Play Stage.
