Former The Daily Show presenter Trevor Noah is to host the 66th edition of the Grammys this weekend, marking the fourth year in a row that he has anchored the prestigious music awards ceremony.

“In his previous years as host, Noah was praised for his ability to blend humor with a deep appreciation for music, creating a seamless and engaging experience for both the in-house audience and at-home viewers,” the Recording Academy said of its decision to re-hire the 39-year-old. “His return for the 2024 Grammys is a testament to his impact and popularity in the role.”

Who is Trevor Noah?

Born on 20 February 1984 in Johannesburg, South Africa, Noah has overcome numerous obstacles to become one of the most recognisable faces in comedy today. Comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, his charm, intelligence and empathy ooze out every time he takes to the screen or is involved in a project. And if you can make it to the end of any of his comedy gigs without tears in your eyes then you need to go see a doctor.

Growing up during apartheid, Noah faced discrimination and poverty. His mother, a black woman, was imprisoned for having a relationship with a white man, Trevor’s father. This taboo relationship also put young Noah’s life in danger, as interracial relationships were illegal during apartheid. Despite these challenges, he discovered a love for comedy at a young age, using humour to escape the hardships of his childhood.

Noah’s big break in comedy

In 2006, Noah’s big break came when he was selected to participate in the Johannesburg International Comedy Festival. His performance was a hit, and he quickly became one of South Africa’s most popular comedians. In 2010, he was invited to perform on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, marking his US debut.

Noah’s success continued to grow, and in 2015 he was selected to replace Jon Stewart - who this month returned to the role - as the host of satirical news program The Daily Show. Noah has used his platform to address political and social issues, including race, gender, and inequality. He has also interviewed numerous influential figures, including former US President Barack Obama - check out his impression and story of when he met him - as well as pop star Beyoncé.

Trevor Noah, an advocate for people’s rights

In addition to his work on The Daily Show, Noah has written and starred in several stand-up comedy specials, including Lost in Translation, Afraid of the Dark and, most recently, Where Was I. He has also published a memoir, Born a Crime, which details his upbringing in South Africa and the challenges he faced as a mixed-race child.

Noah’s quick wit, insightful commentary, and comedic timing have earned him a reputation as one of the funniest and smartest comedians of his generation. He has been recognised with numerous accolades, including multiple Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, and a Peabody Award. Who better then to hand out these prized trophies in LA?!

Despite his success, Noah remains humble and grateful for his journey. He is an advocate for numerous causes, including education and women’s rights, and is dedicated to using his platform to make a positive impact in the world.

At the end of 2022, Noah made the decision to leave The Daily Show.

If I had to summarise Noah’s life - and clearly I don’t know him personally, so this is based on what I have witnessed over the years as an admirer of his work - he is a testament to the power of perseverance and the transformative effect of humour. From humble beginnings in apartheid South Africa to hosting one of the most popular late-night TV shows in the world, his journey is a remarkable one filled with laughter, triumph, and hope.
