Model, author, and actress Emily Ratajkowski has shed light on why she decided to step away from the acting world indefinitely.

Ratajkowski made the decision in 2020 to fire her manager, agent, and commercial reps.

Her big break into the acting world was in the 2014 thriller ‘Gone Girl’, based on the novel of the same name. She played Andie Hardy, the main character Nick’s (Ben Affleck) mistress, and was handpicked by Ben Affleck for the role.

Since then, Ratajkowski has appeared in numerous films and TV shows, from the 2018 comedy ‘I Feel Pretty’ to the Netflix dramedy series ‘Easy’. Nevertheless, the star felt it was time to put an end to her acting career.

Emily Ratajkowski is tired of being commodified

Ratajkowski has been in the spotlight since she started modeling at 14. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times this past week, she says she’s tired of having all her decisions made for her.

“I was like, ‘I can handle receiving phone calls’,” she explained.

“I’m gonna make these decisions. None of you have my best interest at heart. And you all hate women.’”

The model says she didn’t feel like acting provided a cathartic experience for her. Rather, she felt objectified and no longer wanted to make herself “digestible to powerful men in Hollywood”.

Emrata reflects on women’s treatment in Hollywood

Ratajkowski commented on the unjust and exploitative treatment many women face in Hollywood.

In her New York Times Bestseller ‘My Body’, she writes about her experiences navigating both Hollywood and the modeling industry as a young woman.

In addition to her reflections on her suggestive performance in Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ music video, Ratajkowski also comments on her feelings of discomfort towards her own ex-husband, Sebastian Bear-McClard. Bear-McClard has been accused of sexual misconduct.

Ratajkowski told the Los Angeles Times that though it was nice at times to have a partner who understood the industry she worked in, it also presented many difficulties. The pair divorced in September 2022.

“Obviously, it would be nice to be with somebody who’s in the industry or understands it, but I don’t think I can,” she began.

“That was what that essay was about … but then having a part of me that was so connected to it was even harder.”
