1 Million immigrants have left the US ‘voluntarily’ as a result of Trump’s policy

The Trump administration implemented self-deportation as an alternative for immigrants to leave the country.

Update:

President Donald Trump has pledged to carry out the largest mass deportation program in US history. However, his administration lacks the resources to detain and remove the more than 10 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the country. As a result, it has turned to alternative strategies—one of them being “self-deportation.”

Through the CBP Home app, immigrants can now register to voluntarily leave the country. In simple terms, self-deportation means choosing to exit the US without being detained or forcibly removed. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) describes it as the “safest option” for undocumented immigrants.

According to DHS, the CBP Home app allows non-citizens to self-deport, potentially enabling them to return legally in the future and pursue the American dream.

Does self-deportation work?

The US government hasn’t released official figures on how many people have self-deported. However, the New York Post, citing reports from the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post, estimates that nearly one million undocumented immigrants have chosen to leave the country voluntarily.

The Wall Street Journal reported a drop of 773,000 in the immigrant population during the first four months of Trump’s second term. Meanwhile, the Washington Post noted that around one million foreign workers have exited the US labor force since March.

The Trump administration gives away money for self-deportation

In early May, DHS announced that undocumented immigrants who use the CBP Home app to self-deport would receive a $1,000 payment, issued once their departure is confirmed through the app.

“If you’re here illegally, self-deportation is the safest, most affordable way to leave the United States and avoid arrest,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. “DHS is now offering undocumented immigrants travel assistance and a stipend to return to their home countries through the CBP Home app.”
