Juan Manuel Ceballos, neurologist, reveals the everyday foods that could be triggering your migraines

Most people don’t seem to realize how many potential health risks they expose themselves to throughout the day. Some are obvious, while others go completely unnoticed. Food is one example. According to neurologist Juan Manuel Ceballos, certain everyday foods may play a role in triggering migraines, something he explained in a video shared by Hospital Centro Andalucía in Lucena, Spain.

Before discussing diet, Ceballos says it’s important to understand what a migraine actually is. “A migraine is a type of headache that significantly limits a patient’s quality of life,” he explains. It can also cause symptoms such as photophobia – an extreme sensitivity to light – and phonophobia, which is heightened sensitivity to sound. Many people also experience nausea, vomiting, and severe head pain that often requires medication to shorten the attack.

Why your diet could be making migraines worse

When asked whether lifestyle changes can help reduce migraine attacks, Ceballos’s answer is straightforward: improving your diet is one of the first steps.

He recommends avoiding alcohol whenever possible, singling out red wine because it contains compounds that may worsen headaches.

The neurologist also mentions foods that frequently appear in discussions about migraine triggers, including chocolate and aged cheese. While these foods don’t affect everyone the same way, he says some people may benefit from eliminating certain dietary triggers if they notice a clear connection with their migraines.

More than just food causing migraines

Diet isn’t the only factor. Ceballos stresses that regular exercise and healthy sleep habits are equally important in helping reduce migraine frequency.

He also reassures patients that lifestyle changes are only part of the picture. Modern medicine offers a wide range of treatment options, including medications to relieve symptoms during an attack and preventive therapies for people who experience migraines on a regular basis.
