Are you excited about the glitz and glamour of another awards ceremony that is almost upon us? Well, I’m guessing the fact that you’re reading this article is that you have a few doubts about exactly what this one is all about. Allow me to fill in some gaps...

Know your Hollywood Foreign Press Association

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a group of journalists and photographers who cover the film and television industry in the United States for international media outlets. Essentially, they’re a bunch of people from all over the world who love movies and TV, and get to travel to Hollywood to write about and photograph all the latest and greatest in the entertainment world.

As you likely know, they’re also the ones responsible for the Golden Globe Awards, which are the annual awards given out to recognize excellence in film and television. So, if you’re a fan of the Golden Globes and all that aforementioned glitz and glamour that comes with it, you can thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for that!

And if you like celebrities getting roasted, then the GGs offered up Ricky Gervais as hosts for a few years. Not for the easily offended.

What is a Golden Globe, anyway?

Well, an actual Golden Globe is a beautifully crafted, golden statuette that stands proudly on a pedestal. It’s the kind of award that you could look at and go, “Yip, that’s definitely one of them.” It’s shiny, it’s golden, it’s got a little globe on top, and it just screams “award-winning excellence.”

But beyond its physical appearance, a Golden Globe is also a symbol of achievement and recognition in the film and television industry. It’s the kind of award that actors, directors, writers, and other industry professionals dream of winning someday. To hold a Golden Globe in your hands is to know that you’ve made a significant impact in your field, and that your work has been recognised by your peers, no matter what that English lad Gervais says!

So, in short, a Golden Globe is a pretty damn cool thing to have on your mantelpiece. Or, you know, wherever you keep your shiny, golden statuettes. We all have a place, right?!

It’s also worth noting that these awards are often seen as a predictor of the Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars).

Golden Globe highlights:

  • In 1974, Jack Nicholson won his first Golden Globe for his role in “Chinatown.”
  • In 1982, Sissy Spacek won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”
  • In 1998, Gwyneth Paltrow won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for her role in “Shakespeare in Love.”
  • In 2006, Hugh Laurie won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama for his role in “House.”
  • In 2016, Lady Gaga won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for her role in “American Horror Story: Hotel.”

As you can see, the Golden Globe Awards have recognized some truly talented actors and actresses over the years, and have helped to launch the careers of many up-and-coming stars. It’s always an exciting night of glamour, entertainment, and (of course) some truly outstanding performances!
