2024 Primary Calendar: Elections and voter registration deadlines

On Monday, 15 January, GOP voters in Iowa will head out to participate in the first election of the 2024 season. The GOP candidates seeking the nomination have been preparing for the Iowa caucuses for months. Former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, has gained on former president Donald Trump, but the most recent polls still show him with a sizeable lead.

Between now and June, voters in the US states, territories, and the District of Colombia will have a chance to vote in the primaries, thus influencing the candidates that will face off on the November ballot. In the majority of states, all parties vote on the same day. In those where the elections are held on different days, both dates are noted below.

When are the voter registration deadlines for each state?

To ensure you can cast a ballot, you must verify that you are registered to vote in the state in which you live. You can check your voter registration status through the National Association of Secretaries of State. You will be asked to select your state from a drop-down menu and enter your personal information so that the records (if they exist can be pulled).

If no records appear and you need to register, many states require one to do so before the election. Several states allow voters to register on election day, but one should verify that it is an option.

Which states have same-day registration?

Nearly half of all states allow voters to register on the same day as the election. Often, those who have not registered will be given a provisional ballot that will be counted once their registration has been processed.
