58 years later: Mystery solved as missing man’s car pulled from Mississippi River
Police found a 1960s Buick with a sonar device, and it was recovered by authorities virtually intact.
The dive team from the Stearns-Benton County Sheriff’s Office in Minnesota has recovered a car from the Mississippi River that had been missing for more than half a century. Using sonar equipment, officers located an intact vehicle – a Buick from the 1960s – submerged in the water.
What happened to the man in the Buick?
Once the car was towed to the Sartell Police Department, investigators examined the interior and found human remains inside. The subsequent investigation involved cross-checking the vehicle identification number (VIN) and objects recovered in the car, which ultimately led to the identity of its owner: a 59-year-old man who had been missing since the late 1960s.
The effort drew on multiple agencies, including the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, the Sartell Police and Fire Departments, Sartell’s Department of Public Works, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and Collins Brothers Towing.
According to local reports cited by The Guardian, the man was last seen in September 1967 driving his blue Buick Electra. At the time, he was carrying a large sum of money and working for an appliance repair company.
