A doctor warns about the risk of drinking water before going to sleep: “During the night the vasopressin hormone is adjusted”
Dr. Julio Maset reveals how your last drink of the day should be—and the trick to avoid sleep interruptions.
The heat is on. When summer arrives, it often hits like a truck: it doesn’t betray you—but it never gives a warning. There are endless ways to fight high temperatures, from creative activities to breathable clothing and new habits to cool down. But year after year, no matter the trend or setting, the most effective and simplest way to beat the heat remains the same: drinking water.
Things get even worse when the sweat and discomfort disrupt your sleep, making that cold bottle of water next to the bed seem even more essential. But while reaching for a drink may feel like the right move, it comes with nearly unavoidable side effects if done right before sleep.
This is what Dr. Julio Maset—a familiar face in a recent video by Cinfa Salud, a Spanish health company with over 245,000 followers on TikTok—explains.
“Drinking water is essential for our health, but is it a good idea to do it right before bed? Let’s look at the pros and cons,” the post begins.
On vasopressin and sleep interruption
Maset breaks it down clearly:
“Staying hydrated is key to keeping the body functioning properly. Drinking water—even before bed—can help prevent symptoms of dehydration like headaches or fatigue,” he says.He also adds that at night, our bodies regulate the hormone vasopressin, which “helps reduce urine production,” allowing us to maintain a good fluid balance during sleep.
But that balance is disrupted when we chug water just before hitting the pillow.
“However, drinking water right before bed can interrupt our rest,” Maset warns. It increases the chances of waking up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.
The key to sleeping well
His advice?
“The best approach is to stay well-hydrated throughout the day. That way, your final water intake won’t be excessive or too close to bedtime.”
