Update:

Last June, a truck driver made a stop at a service area near Montblanc in Tarragona (Spain). It was then that, without realizing it, thieves stole the truck’s cargo: 8,800 bottles of the Mexican beer Corona (distributed in more than 370 boxes). The driver, unaware of what had happened while he was out of the vehicle, resumed driving. It wasn’t until he reached his destination, in France, that he realized what had occured over the border.

He later decided to file a complaint with the Spanish Civil Guard in the municipality of Altea, where the transport company was located. However, the day before, the Catalan Mossos d’Esquadra found the beers inside a broken-down truck without a driver near Vinaixa (Lleida). The officers, seeing that the cargo was not stacked on pallets, considered the possibility of theft.

“Mexican fiesta planned”

The Catalan officers also came across a van with three men and suspected they could be the ones responsible for the alleged robbery. But there was no report of the theft of those beers at that period of time despite the officers unearthing cutting tools and two of the individuals having previous convictions for theft and at that stage, since there was no report of theft, the men were simply identified and allowed to continue driving.

Until this point the boxes of Corona were being held at the Les Borges Blanques police station with the local mayor Josep Maria Tarragó (relying on the judicial authority’s right to donate any waste found within the municipality) optimistic that the town would be able to keep the Mexican beers with town set ton have it’s annual ‘fiestas’ next August. “The townspeople wanted the beers to celebrate a Mexican festival. If it were rice, we would donate it to a charitable cause, but in this case, I don’t think it’s ethical,” he commented jokingly.
