A passenger on a flight to Mallorca has been awarded nearly $6,000 in compensation by a well-known airline after suffering severe burns from a hot coffee during the trip, according to iefimerida.gr. The woman said she had to administer her own first aid immediately after the accident.
How did the accident occur?
The incident occurred when the coffee spilled on the passenger during in‑flight service. Crew members told her they had run out of coffee cup lids, so she had to hold the cup uncovered.
“I had to give myself first aid,” she explained. When she asked for a towel to soak up the coffee and prevent a more serious burn, the crew replied that they didn’t have any. The passenger had to dry herself off with her own dress.
Passenger files for compensation
After the flight, the passenger filed a formal complaint with the airline, seeking compensation for the injuries she suffered and the physical and emotional impact of the accident. The company reviewed the case and ultimately agreed to compensate her with €5,000 ($5,800).
“I didn’t want to make a scene, but what really bothered me was the airline’s lack of organization in an emergency,” the woman said of her claim.
In the end, the airline acknowledged responsibility for the incident and emphasized the importance of safety during in‑flight beverage service. Although such accidents are uncommon, the case highlights the risks posed by hot liquids served onboard, especially in the narrow aisles of an aircraft.
