A man builds himself a self-sufficient floating village on a remote lake

A man chose to leave urban life behind and isolate himself completely in the jungles of Vietnam, where within a year he single-handedly built a self-sufficient floating village on a remote lake. The settlement was constructed almost entirely from bamboo and wood, using traditional carpentry techniques and natural resources available in the environment without electricity, machinery or outside help.

The village operates as an integrated system capable of providing shelter, food, water, transportation and security. By placing the structures on the water, the builder reduced risks associated with wet terrain and local wildlife while also gaining direct access to the lake as a constant food source.

Bamboo forms the structural backbone of the settlement. The material was used for the floating platform, floors, walls and roof, completely replacing industrial materials. The pieces were assembled without nails, relying instead on cuts and bindings that allow the structure to adapt to changes in water levels during floods or periods of drought.

Self-sufficiency built from natural resources

Over time, the original construction evolved into a small organized village with separate areas for cooking, resting, storage and food production. Part of the floating platform was dedicated to fish farming through an integrated pond system, while the lake itself provides constant water renewal and a steady source of protein without requiring long fishing trips.

Self-sufficiency is completed through a floating garden and a cultivation system adapted to the aquatic environment, where vegetables, fruit and rice are grown using organic compost. Every activity within the settlement depends on human energy and natural principles such as gravity, water and fire, creating a fully functional model that operates entirely without modern infrastructure.
