Typically, people call in saying that they are feeling under the weather to try and get out of work. Unfortunately, summer isn’t generally a good time for the cold or flu, lest there is some nasty bug going around. So what alternatives are there?

Netizens recommend using your car as an excuse. Some common car trouble excuses that could result in you having to miss work from Reddit user ‘UnethicalLifeProTips’ include having a dead battery or your car won’t start, a flat tire or your car broke down. Mechanical failures may include problems with the transmission, issues with the engine, or a piece of the car has come loose making you a danger on the road.

If you are worried about your boss wanting proof, one user suggested taking the air out of your tire, taking a picture of it and then finding a bent rusty nail to provide as the culprit. The same person also said you can loosen the battery to stage your car not being able to start, or swapping in a new gas filter, and using the old one as proof.

However, users recommend keeping it simple, less explaining to do. Also, to be careful about the frequency of how often you are trying to play hooky to avoid drawing unwanted attention and deeper inquires into your “problematic” vehicle.

One thing to keep in mind though, with ride share apps omnipresent you should be prepared for your boss to posit that you use one in order to get into work.
