A Reddit user reports that his neighbor diverts rainwater toward his house by placing sandbags on the sidewalk.

After sudden storm breaks out, homeowner rages at what neighbor is doing in the yard: “In my town that’s against the law”
Living side by side can become a real headache when someone insists on putting their own interests above everyone else’s. That’s what happened to one homeowner who turned to the Reddit forum Bad Neighbours to report an unusual and, he says, illegal practice.
He explained that his neighbor has been placing sandbags on the sidewalk solely to redirect rainwater toward his property. Far from being harmless, the move has caused serious damage – erosion of the soil and water pooling at the foundations of his home.
“It makes the ground erode much faster than it should,” he wrote in a post that quickly went viral.

Selfishness that wrecks other people’s gardens
The story has sparked anger among hundreds of users, many of whom condemned the neighbor’s lack of empathy. According to the comments, the decision seems motivated only by a desire to protect his own lawn, regardless of the impact on those around him.
“In my town that is against the law,” one commenter reminded him, pointing out that municipal ordinances often explicitly ban altering ground slopes or redirecting stormwater onto someone else’s property.
The photos shared on Reddit reveal the scale of the problem: after each storm, the homeowner’s yard turns into a swamp, with the risk of long-term structural damage.
The neighbor won’t stop
In a follow-up post, the homeowner said the situation has only gotten worse. Instead of backing down, his neighbor has gone so far as to block the entire sidewalk with sandbags – not only diverting the water but also creating a tripping hazard for pedestrians.
He said he has called city officials several times, and even the police have come to remove the sandbags, but every time it rains they reappear.
With no real solution in sight, he has put up a sandbag of his own in an effort to limit the damage to his house, though he admits it’s little more than a temporary fix. “I don’t know what else to try. Talking to him isn’t an option – we don’t get along, and it won’t lead anywhere,” he lamented.
