Today, Alex Murdaugh will testify in a South Carolina court, where he is on trial for murdering his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and their son, Paul Murdaugh, in 2021. The husband and father of the victims has pled not guilty to the charges.

The trial has captured the interest of many around the country, and now, Netflix has released a mini-series covering the details of the case. The show Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, directed by Julia Willoughby Nason and Jenner Furst, includes information on more than just the horrific family murder but also the death of a teenager and friend of the family, Mallory Beach.

Who is Mallory Beach?

Mallory Beach was a friend of Paul Murdaugh, who was killed in a boating accident where Paul was alleged to have been driving in 2019. The Netflix show details connections uncovered by investigators between the double homicide and the boating accident that killed Mallory. Some reports show that Paul may have been intoxicated when he crashed the boat, which sent five teenagers overboard, and which ultimately killed Mallory. The first of three episodes of the series includes interviews with friends of Paul who were present on the night of Mallory’s death. Some of the witnesses stated that they had urged Paul not to drive, considering his condition after many hours of drinking.

The Netflix mini-series casts new light on the tragic death of the young girl and how the boating accident led investigators to scrutinize the finances and legal record of Alex Murdaugh. The now-disbarred lawyer was eventually indicted on 70 charges of fraudulent and illegal business practices, which Murdaugh used to enrich himself as an insurance lawyer.
