A man bought a lighthouse for $192,000 and turned its 1900s ruins into a superstructure: “I started getting obsessed”

His commitment to preserving historic landmarks led him to take on the restoration of a century-old lighthouse standing in the Chesapeake Bay off the coast of Maryland.

The project, led by Richard Cucé, aims to save neglected maritime structures from decay and give them new life as destinations for visitors, students, and environmental education programs.

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

When the U.S. government announced the sale of several surplus lighthouses, Cucé saw the perfect opportunity to bring his vision to life. After participating in a public auction, he purchased three offshore properties, paying approximately $192,000 for one of them.

His decision to invest in these structures stemmed from his passion for restoring historic buildings and, above all, his desire to preserve an important chapter of America’s maritime history.

Among his acquisitions was the Hooper Island Lighthouse, located in the Chesapeake Bay off Maryland’s eastern shore. Built more than a century ago, the lighthouse had sat abandoned for nearly 60 years when Cucé purchased it. The structure can only be reached by small boat, as it stands on its own offshore platform surrounded by open water.

Bringing an abandoned lighthouse back to life

Cucé’s goal is to completely renovate the lighthouse’s six stories and make the structure fully livable once again. He has documented the restoration process on social media, showcasing the addition of bedrooms, a full kitchen, bathrooms, and a dining area with panoramic views of the surrounding bay.

The lighthouse’s beacon continues to serve as a navigational aid for vessels traveling through the area, while its distinctive architectural character has been carefully preserved, including its signature round windows that resemble the portholes of a ship.

Once completed, the restoration is expected to cost $950,000. Although the investment is substantial, Cucé believes the project will generate strong returns thanks to its one-of-a-kind setting, with sunrise and sunset views among its biggest attractions.

Giving historic lighthouses a new purpose

Cucé ultimately hopes to transform these lighthouses into educational and environmental centers where visitors, students, and researchers can learn about the importance of preserving both America’s maritime heritage and the Chesapeake Bay’s fragile ecosystems.

The initiative represents an effort to protect historic landmarks that have become increasingly vulnerable as advances in automation and modern navigation have rendered many traditional lighthouses obsolete. Through projects like Cucé ‘s, these iconic structures have a new opportunity to remain standing for generations to come.
