Álvaro Fernández, pharmacist: “The intense, irrational fear of beautiful women is a real illness”

The content creator explains on social media what venustraphobia is, a form of anxiety linked to being around women who are perceived as very attractive.

Hombre con miedo a mujeres guapas

Pharmacist and science communicator Álvaro Rodríguez explained in one of his latest TikTok videos that the fear of beautiful women is not just a fictional idea. It is a real phenomenon known as venustraphobia, an irrational fear that can appear when someone faces women they perceive as highly attractive.

In the video, the pharmacist clarifies that this is not the same as shyness or the mild discomfort someone might feel when speaking to a person they find very attractive. Instead, it is an anxiety response that can trigger physical symptoms such as hyperventilation, rapid heartbeat, cold sweats, or even a full anxiety attack.

In some cases, the situation can escalate to the point where the person experiences such intense fear that they begin avoiding these interactions altogether, meaning they stop having contact with women they consider very attractive.

Venustraphobia is generally considered within the broader category of issues related to social anxiety. Although the term does not appear as an official diagnosis in clinical manuals, the type of anxiety response it describes is part of the disorders that affect social interaction when they begin to interfere with daily life.

A case similar to Raj in ‘The Big Bang Theory’

In his explanation, the pharmacist offers a practical example that many sitcom fans will recognize immediately. He points out that this phobia is similar to what the character Rajesh Koothrappali experiences in the series ‘The Big Bang Theory’. For much of the show, Raj is unable to speak to women without experiencing anxiety or relying on alcohol to lower his inhibitions.

In that specific case, however, the example is closer to caligynephobia, a term used to describe a fear of all women without distinction. Venustraphobia would be a more specific variation, focused only on women considered very attractive.

Rodríguez also notes that these terms are usually used descriptively rather than as official clinical diagnoses. Even so, he reminds viewers that when this kind of social anxiety limits someone’s social life or causes significant distress, it can be addressed through the usual treatments used for social anxiety disorder.
