Archaeologists discover an impressive 2,000-year-old Roman canal buried underground

A highly sophisticated canal that reshaped the landscape of the Upper Rhine Valley has been uncovered.

Archaeologists working in agricultural fields in Germany noticed something unusual beneath the surface. It appeared as an unusually straight anomaly, similar to a riverbed. After closer investigation, it turned out to be an ancient Roman canal that once connected the Rhine River to forts and settlements of the Roman Empire.

The canal appears to have been associated with the fort of Trebur-Astheim, located in the Hessische Ried region within the Upper Rhine Valley. This canal was a major engineering project that reshaped the landscape during the first century AD, and it is one of the few known examples of a navigable Roman canal built north of the Alps in late antiquity. A study published in the scientific journal Land concluded that the canal was entirely the result of deliberate human construction.

An anomaly that was in fact an ancient Roman canal

The study’s authors note that the burgus of Trebur-Astheim “was used as an inland harbour, providing a secure docking site for the transport of wares and troops along the Roman-Germanic border.” The canal once measured about 8.2 feet deep and roughly 49 feet wide, and it played a crucial role in water management in the region.

Technically complex, the canal was built sometime between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. It provided a direct connection from the Rhine to the burgus of Trebur-Astheim, which was constructed under the rule of Emperor Valentinian I. The site included a central structure with defensive walls and ditches leading to an artificial basin.

Although the canal now remains buried, it once served as a kind of waterway highway for the Romans in a region they firmly controlled.
