The Floridian Everglades, the vast wetland ecosystem teeming with life, is home to some scaly residents that will attack if provoked.

While uncommon, crocodile bites in the Everglades do occur. One such incident involved a boater whose sailboat capsized, forcing him into crocodile territory. Luckily, the attack resulted in a leg laceration, and the man received medical attention. It was the first attack since 2014.

How common are crocodiles in Florida?

American crocodiles are found in coastal areas throughout the Caribbean and Central and South America. However, Florida’s Everglades marks the northernmost tip of their range. Preferring brackish or saltwater environments, they thrive in mangrove swamps, coves, and creeks. Interestingly, the Everglades is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles coexist due to the make-up of the water.

These reclusive reptiles can grow up to 14 feet long and are distinguished from their alligator neighbors by their slender snouts and lighter coloration. Once hunted to near extinction, the American crocodile population in Florida has seen a remarkable comeback. Listed as endangered in 1975, their numbers have rebounded thanks to strict protection measures. Today, an estimated 2,000 adults live in Florida, a testament to successful conservation efforts.

The return of the American crocodile is not just a win for the species itself, but for the entire Everglades ecosystem. Crocodiles play a vital role as apex predators, helping to control prey populations and maintain a healthy balance. Their presence also contributes to a more diverse and resilient food web.

However, human-crocodile interactions can sometimes occur. As development encroaches on crocodile habitat and more people recreate in their territory, the potential for encounters increases. It’s important to remember that these are wild animals, and respecting their space is crucial.

Here are some safety tips to keep in mind while exploring crocodile habitats:

  • Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Never swim in areas where crocodiles are known to be present.
  • Keep a safe distance from the water’s edge.
  • Do not feed or approach crocodiles.
