Why is Costco gasoline always cheaper?
In the United States, Costco typically offers prices about 30 cents lower than local gas stations.

Costco is one of the nation’s most popular wholesale clubs, known for its warehouse inventory and famous food court deals. But for millions of drivers, its biggest draw is offering gas at significantly lower prices than local service stations.
While Costco’s gas prices vary widely depending on regional taxes, local supply, and market conditions, they typically run about 30 cents per gallon cheaper than neighboring stations.
Why is Costco gas cheap?
Costco relies on its massive volume and membership model to drive profits—a strategy independent or small-business gas stations simply can’t replicate.
Thanks to recurring membership fees, Costco can sell products, including gasoline, slightly cheaper. Traditional gas stations, by contrast, must mark up prices to maintain profit margins and cover overhead. Gasoline also serves as a loss leader for Costco: cheap fuel draws members to the pumps, and many end up heading inside the warehouse to shop.
How to find Costco gas prices near you
You can check nearby locations, station hours, and live fuel prices directly on Costco’s official website. To fill up at a Costco gas station, simply scan or swipe your membership card at the pump before paying.
How much does a Costco membership cost for gas access?
Costco offers three membership tiers: Gold Star, Business, and Executive. While each comes with its own perks, all three include access to the wholesale club’s low gas prices.
Gold Star membership
The baseline Gold Star membership costs $65 per year. It covers up to two people aged 18 or older living at the same address and provides access to both in-store and online shopping.
Business membership
The Business tier also costs $65 annually and is designed specifically for business owners purchasing items for commercial, personal, or resale use. It includes a free secondary card for a household member and allows primary owners to add additional cardholders for $65 each per year. Applicants must provide business verification, such as a business license or three forms of commercial identification.
Executive membership
Costco’s top-tier Executive membership is $130 per year and includes two household cards. Beyond greater savings on services and select Costco Travel packages, Executive members earn an annual 2% reward on eligible purchases and gain access to exclusive shopping hours.
