The Social Security Fairness Act promises to adjust past and future benefits for almost 3 million Americans but that boost to income may take time.

Are you a Social Security beneficiary? You could be in line for a second October payment

Update:

The Social Security Administration (SSA) usually sends one monthly payment to retirees, survivors, and recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). However, in certain months, some beneficiaries receive two payments instead of one.

That’s the case in October, when SSI recipients will receive two deposits. The SSA already issued one on the first of the month and will send another at the end. Here’s why this happens and when to expect the second payment.

Why there are two SSI payments this month

According to the SSA, SSI benefits are typically sent on the first day of every month. If that date falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, the payment is advanced to the previous business day.

Because Saturday, November 1, falls on a weekend this year, the November SSI payment will go out on Friday, October 31. That means recipients will receive two payments in October. Since the November payment is sent early, the next one won’t arrive until December 1.

How much SSI recipients will get

In 2025, the maximum SSI benefit is $967 for an individual, $1,450 for an eligible couple, and $484 for an essential person. The exact amount varies by beneficiary, since each payment is calculated individually based on income, living arrangements, and other factors.

All SSI and Social Security benefits – including retirement, survivors, and SSDI – are now issued electronically by direct deposit to a bank account or to a Direct Express debit card. As of September 30, the SSA has stopped mailing paper checks altogether.

When next month’s Social Security payments arrive

The SSA payment schedule remains consistent every month. SSI payments are made on the first day of each month. Those who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 get their payments on the third day of the month.

Everyone else is paid according to their date of birth:

  • On the second Wednesday for those born between the 1st and 10th
  • On the third Wednesday for those born between the 11th and 20th
  • On the fourth Wednesday for those born between the 21st and 31st

If any payment date falls on a weekend or holiday, it is advanced to the previous business day.

The SSA’s calendar for November payments will follow these same rules, with deposits scheduled throughout the month depending on each person’s category and birth date.
