The Republican senator from Alabama shared some controversial ideas about reforming the Social Security program. Democrats didn’t delay in criticizing his plan.

Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville calls Social Security a ‘Ponzi scheme.’ His remarks are sparking backlash

Senator Tommy Tuberville gave a speech in the Senate to share his ideas about modifying the current Social Security system in order for Americans to have more freedom to decide how to spend their retirement savings.
“For decades now, the American people have paid into Social Security each month without having any idea if they will ever see a cent of the money that they put in,” Tuberville said. “Your dollar doesn’t grow, and it doesn’t come back to you or your children. It’s a big, gigantic, blown-up Ponzi scheme. And the last time I looked, people who do Ponzi schemes usually go to jail.”

Tuberville did present any legislation which would eliminate Social Security, but he does think the system should be revamped: “It’s a dang shame. The program might not be on the verge of bankruptcy today if they’d just invest part of the young people’s money into the market,” Tuberville said. “But you have to remember, the government relies on your money for their slush fund. The federal government stopped working in your best interest a long time ago,” he said.
Democrats fire back
Bernie Sanders didn’t mince words on Twitter. He claimed the Republicans want to dismantle the program. “Millions of seniors depend on Social Security to stay alive. We will not allow them to destroy this vitally important program,” Sanders said
After Trump and Musk fired 8,000 Social Security workers, Republican Senators are now calling the entire program a “scam“ and trying to dismantle it.

This isn’t the first time Tuberville has criticized the Social Security and, despite his speech on the Senate floor, the Senator has yet to present any legislation to change the system that millions of Americans rely on during retirement.
This is what Republicans think of your hard-earned benefits.
