Stephen Hawking, scientist: “It is not necessary to invoke God to light the fuse and start the Universe”

Stephen Hawking was one of the most influential scientific minds of the modern era. Born on Jan. 8, 1942, in Oxford, England, he devoted much of his life to tackling some of the universe’s greatest mysteries, including its origins, black holes and the nature of time.

Among his most famous statements was this: “It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper [fuse] and start the Universe.”

Hawking wrote those words in his 2010 book The Grand Design, where he argued that the laws of physics are sufficient to explain the existence of the universe without requiring divine intervention.

Hawking reached that conclusion after decades of research into the Big Bang and cosmology. According to his theory, if physical laws such as gravity exist, the universe can arise spontaneously from nothing.

For the British physicist, asking who created the universe was ultimately the wrong question. Based on his understanding of cosmology, time itself began with the Big Bang, meaning there was no “before” in which a creator would have acted.
